Abstract:
A few years ago I implemented the painterly rendering algorithm described by Shiraishi and Yamaguchi [9]. As the title of the work suggests, the technique creates a painted version of a digital photograph, composing many local source image approximations. At the time, the main goal of my implementation were those of speeding up the process and of creating a framework for future painterly rendering methods. During the development process, several opportunities to improve Shiraishi and Yamaguchi’s algorithm became apparent. The results of the first round of experiments were published in a conference [7], but many other ideas had not yet been investigated properly. This is the motivation for my final project.
